Generations of Energy Analytics

Energy Analytics have evolved over time, from the beginnings of analogue meters to the cutting-edge technologies of today. Discover how each generation has shaped the way we monitor, manage, and optimize energy consumption, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future.

1st Generation

In the past, the earliest systems used simple analogue meters, and people had to log the energy data on paper to understand how much energy was being used.

2nd Generation

The introduction of spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel played a pivotal role in enhancing the way energy data was analysed and managed.

3rd Generation

As technology progressed, analogue meters became connected via cables, eliminating the need to physically visit each one to gather data.

4th Generation

With the shift to digital meters, data could be collected more frequently, even as often as once per minute, unlike the old method of monthly readings.

5th Generation

Wireless metering was introduced. This advancement eliminated the need for extensive wiring within factories to gather data.

6th Generation

In order to have a better user interface and being able to collect and process data from many factories, cloud based solutions were introduced. (PRESENT)

Electricity metering technologies

Among the cloud-based providers, there are two different electricity metering technologies:

  1. Set Voltage + Measured Current
  2. Measured Voltage + Measured Current (SenseNode)

Not all companies are making the same decisions about how to measure energy efficiency.

They have a choice. They can choose between wireless systems with shortcuts (e.g. measuring only the current and estimating voltage). It’s seen as a cheaper way that some companies use to save on setup costs.

The other option is to prioritize obtaining the full, accurate data (measuring both current and voltage). The latter costs a bit more, but it’s the quality larger companies with higher standards are demanding and value.

We meet the demands of large manufacturing companies

When we created SenseNode, we studied the needs and priorities of large manufacturing companies. They have high energy savings demands, high standards in accuracy and data quality overall and need to move quickly with audits to comply with regulation like CSRD.

There is a risk associated with inaccurate data – a risk that we cannot afford. As we advance into the next generation of energy management (8th generation), which will use advanced technologies like AI and automated decision-making. For AI to be reliable, it needs accurate data.

The machinery intensive larger manufacturers also move machinery and other equipment now and then, so a cable-based solution would be expensive and cumbersome over time.
