Connect Purpose to Technology

April 11, 2024

Are you tasked with streamlining your energy use or reporting energy data to the company's scope 3 reporting? As a leader, you need to set a goal and create conditions for everyone to contribute within the framework of their normal work flow. Leadership cannot be done by anyone else, but information and nudging will do a large part of the work towards the goal in everyday life.

What if technology could actually do a relatively large part of the job without any changes to your workflow? How would that feel?

Information

Let's take energy use in a manufacturing industry as an example. Neither the staff, the customers nor the shareholders want to pay for a lot of energy that does no value-creating work in the business. Since energy is invisible, no one in the entire organization can maximize the benefit of the company's purchased energy and thus avoid energy waste without under-measuring with instruments. Most individuals in the organization do not have such an instrument. And, if they had, would they really be running around looking for wasted energy all day? Hardly! After all, everyone is there to produce a maximum of salable products.

The probability that the business would become energy-smart without detailed information about its energy use is close to zero. Therefore, let the IIOT technology collect, structure and process the information in real time and make it available at the fingertips of the entire organization through e.g. public dashboards. Slightly simplified, we can then say that we have the prerequisites in place.

nudging

Let's stay in the example above. We notice that between 5-15% of the energy efficiency potential is linked to the behavior of the individuals in an organization. Therefore, collective behavior is often one of the first sub-goals in energy efficiency work. Now we will make it possible to achieve desirable behaviors in hundreds of employees in the business. It needs to be done with communication about what is expected and clear objectives, but what is not measured will not be done. Those who achieve the best results work a lot with nudging through dashboards, QR codes, notifications, alarms and include energy in the meeting before each shift. There we have some examples of nudging which means that the target and the information are always available, like a speedometer on a car.

Are we doing what we agreed to?

As leaders, we also need to be able to see that the work produces the desired outcome and be able to quantify the value of the efficiency work. Those who succeed best have automated reports that are filled with relevant information hour by hour so that you can easily go back in time and follow the development of the direction of collective behavior.
