Bergkvist Siljan, part of Europe's third-largest sawmill group Mayr-Melnhof Holz Holding Group, has been actively working on energy efficiency at their facility in Insjön since 2022. Led by a dedicated electricity savings group, the company has implemented SenseNode's Energy Analytics system, which has resulted in significant energy savings. The system measures energy usage in everything from sawing lines to heat production and pellet presses.

Behavioral Changes Yield Quick Results
Using data from Energy Analytics, the electricity savings group identified a high base load in the processing plant, where fans and lighting were often running unnecessarily, especially at night. By introducing new shutdown routines for this equipment when not in use, Bergkvist Siljan managed to reduce energy consumption by 30 000kWh per month. This shows how changes in behavior and routines can lead to significant energy savings. 
Smarter Lighting with Measurable Results
Bergkvist Siljan continuously works on gradually replacing existing lighting with energy-efficient LED technology. This ongoing work, combined with new routines for turning off lighting at night, has resulted in significant energy savings. Measurements via SenseNode enable monitoring of the effect and continued optimization of lighting usage. 
Managing Reactive Power with Large Savings

During the analysis of energy data from one of the adjusting works, an unjustified high load was discovered. Measurements confirmed suspicions of high reactive power. The electricity saving group explains the concept: "Reactive effect can be compared to the foam in a beer glass. We want to minimize the 'foam' to get the most out of the energy we use." To fix the problem, Bergkvist Siljan installed phase compensation. The result was an annual energy saving of 250 kWh, with an investment cost that paid for itself within a year.

Compressor Optimization with Major Impact
A change in shift times and operating routines at Bergkvist Siljan led to unexpected energy savings for the compressors. Through detailed data collection, the company could quantify the effect: a reduction of approximately 150 000kWh annually. To further improve efficiency, the company has invested in a leak detection device, whose benefits will be trackable in energy data going forward.
Continuous Improvement Work to Reduce Base Load
Through continuous analysis of energy data, Bergkvist Siljan has discovered new opportunities for efficiency. One example is the decommissioning of unnecessary construction fans, which has saved over 100 000kWh per year. To replace remaining construction fans, the possibility of installing energy-efficient water-based heating is being investigated. Through careful monitoring, they have also discovered and addressed cases where heating and cooling fans were unintentionally operating simultaneously.
